Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing and yet energising form of massage. It originates from Japan and follows the same system as Chinese acupuncture, which is based on the concept of "Qi" or energy. Qi runs in a system called the meridian system that goes in a complete loop throughout the body. There are twellve meridians, joined together, that begin and end in the fingers and toes. The meridians are paired and are mostly named after organs. The meridian pairs are: Lung and Large Intestine, Stomach and Spleen, Heart and Small Intestine, Kidney and Bladder, Triple Heater and Heart Protector, Liver and Gall Bladder.
Shiatsu uses the principle of Kyo/Jitsu to help balance the Qi in the body. If an area of the body has become depleted or low in energy ("Kyo") Shiatsu can draw energy from another part of the body where the energy is blocked (Jitsu).
Shiatsu is a perfect balance for Tai chi.
